Thanks for checking out my blog! Although I’m excited that you found me here, I’ve actually moved to www.getthepancake.com and have even more content for you there!

Do you have a quiet team? Or a team that forgets to cover their hitter? Do you need some team bonding activities to help them support and encourage each other?

This is the perfect drill for you!

The 3 C's Drill: Communication, Coverage, and Celebration

Seriously, my team changed after running this drill, which I found on YouTube one day:

In the video, it is explained that a team of 6 will play to 25. They can earn up to three points from each freeball by:

  1. Communicating;
  2. Covering; and
  3. Celebrating

Teach Your Volleyball Team to “Get the Pancake”

Thanks for checking out my blog! Although I’m excited that you found me here, I’ve actually moved to www.getthepancake.com and have even more content for you there!

I realized something this weekend… I have not written a post which discusses my blog’s namesake! So without further ado, here is how to teach your players to pancake a volleyball!

Teach Your Volleyball Team to "Get the Pancake"

A pancake is one of the greatest game-changing moves which can be found in the sport of volleyball. When a team is able to execute this skill properly, a great deal of excitement is usually generated. Especially if you are able to sideout or win the point, your team’s energy will spike, guaranteed! Pre-Made Volleyball Practice Plan: Learning Setting and Attacking

Thanks for checking out my blog! Although I’m excited that you found me here, I’ve actually moved to www.getthepancake.com and have even more content for you there!

The season has started! This means two things. 1) We’re all scrambling to figure out what our teams’ strengths and weaknesses are, and 2) I will have a lot of practice plans that I share with you!

The beginning of the year is the best time to review basics with your team (although they should constantly be enforced throughout the season). I recommend ALWAYS beginning with passing and serving, as these are the two most fundamental skills one needs to play volleyball. This plan is for our second practice of the year, so we’ve progressed to setting and attacking.

Pre-Made Volleyball Practice Plan: Learning Setting and Attacking

Time: 2-hour practice

Age levels: Any skill level. Adjustments can be made to increase or decrease difficulty

Skills targeted: Setting, attacking, offense.

Teaching Young Players How to Pass a Volleyball

Thanks for checking out my blog! Although I’m excited that you found me here, I’ve actually moved to www.getthepancake.com and have even more content for you there!

Passing. The very first thing we all have to learn in order to advance to any other skill. As much as every young player wants to spend entire practice sessions running through hitting lines, it is important to instill a love of passing in your team.

Teaching Young Players How to Pass a Volleyball

We’ve all heard the saying, “it starts with a pass,” and we’ve probably heard ourselves repeating this little nugget of wisdom once we get into the role of coaching. But think back to when you were a player. Did that quote inspire you? Motivate you? Even matter to you? Probably not.

Telling players that passing is important is not the way to inspire them to work harder at the skill. The way that I have found to encourage players to work harder on their passing is to spend individual time with each of them correcting their skill, and showing them that they can succeed. Little victories are the key to development. Continue reading

3 Reasons to Encourage Failure

Thanks for checking out my blog! Although I’m excited that you found me here, I’ve actually moved to www.getthepancake.com and have even more content for you there!

As a volleyball coach, accepting that failure is a part of the learning process can be hard. In an ideal practice, we would see a mistake, explain how to correct it, and the problem would disappear. Or during a tournament, when we try running a new play for the first time, we get a kill.

This doesn’t happen very often.

If you’re a seasoned coach, you’ve probably tried to correct a player’s form, only to see them go back to their old ways five minutes later. Or you pump up your team that now is the time to try that new play, and they get blocked and lose their momentum and maybe even a little faith in your coaching.

These are failures. But we need them. Continue reading

Competitive and Fun Setting Drill for 8th Graders: Popcorn

Thanks for checking out my blog! Although I’m excited that you found me here, I’ve actually moved to www.getthepancake.com and have even more content for you there!

Setting can be a difficult task to teach to your entire team. I know when I played, if we were all going to learn to set, we just all found a spot on the wall and did wall sets for 15 minutes, or until we complained too much about our arms hurting. Wall sets are not fun. I’m sure you know this as well as I do.

Competitive and fun drill for 8th graders: Popcorn

Keeping drills fun, especially when you are coaching younger teams, is very important. But the drills also need to be game-like and incorporate skills they will actually use in a match. Sometimes combining these two elements can be a challenge, especially with a skill that very few people are naturally gifted at.

I am going to call this drill “Popcorn” because when I see it in my mind, I also envision a popcorn machine heating up the kernels and popcorn flying around through the air.

Advanced Hitting Lines

Thanks for checking out my blog! Although I’m excited that you found me here, I’ve actually moved to www.getthepancake.com and have even more content for you there!

Hate to see your team standing around while you’re warming up? Think your team hits great in practice but isn’t able to execute during a match? Try using this drill!

Traditional hitting lines just don’t cut it. If you’re using this drill, you are practicing how to hit from a perfect toss. How often does that happen during a game? Well, zero. Your setter never gets a nice high toss, and they can NEVER complain about a toss and refuse to set it.

This drill advances your team much quicker than traditional hitting lines for two reasons.

Volleyball Warm-Up Drill: Tip and Chip

Thanks for checking out my blog! Although I’m excited that you found me here, I’ve actually moved to www.getthepancake.com and have even more content for you there!

Some of the greatest overlooked skills in volleyball are the tip and the chip shot. After a beautiful pass and a perfect set, a crowd will go nuts to see the ball smashed to the floor. But a well-placed tip which still results in a kill? It will get applause, but not the crazy jumping up and down from the masses.

www.getthepancake.wordpress.com

Teach your volleyball players the tip and chip game and you will have more attack options during your matches!

And that’s too bad. There have been countless matches where my front row will get blocked, dug, and just plain hit the ball out of bounds trying to avoid a rock-solid defense. The trick here, is to realize that a great defense for these attacks often has a weak spot, right around the blockers or in the middle of the court. The only way to get to these places efficiently? A tip or chip.  Continue reading

The Downball Game

Thanks for checking out my blog! Although I’m excited that you found me here, I’ve actually moved to www.getthepancake.com and have even more content for you there!

The Downball Game! This is my absolute favorite drill. I use it every practice. Yes, EVERY practice! While some coaches might think using the same drill for every practice would be too repetitive and get boring, my girls are always excited to play this game.

The Downball Game – Get The Pancake

I use this as a warm up drill. It allows players to slowly warm up their arms on their swing, and their reaction time doesn’t have to be as quick as it would from an actual front row attack. Continue reading

Fun Volleyball Serving Games and Drills

Thanks for checking out my blog! Although I’m excited that you found me here, I’ve actually moved to www.getthepancake.com and have even more content for you there!

Fun Volleyball Serving Games and DrillsVolleyball is best learned from playing in actual game-like situations. Having that said, it isn’t always the most fun way to practice. These are two drills that are great for rewarding good behavior, or for picking your team up when they’re down. I recommend using these sparingly, and only at appropriate times. Continue reading
